Target Audience Research- Audience Cycles

An audience cycle describes how the target audience for an artist changes over time as the artist themselves develop.

A good example is British boy band, Take That.
Originally formed in 1990, made up of five friends from Manchester, Take That appealed to teenagers both male and female in the rock and roll genre. Their older music originally had a fast tempo and the members danced around playing their instruments and singing. When they re-formed in 2005, their music had changed and ever since, they have appealed to a different audience. Their songs became slower with more meaning and it had appeared the once young happy lads had grown up into mature gentlemen. Take That's target audience changed from raunchy young male and female teenagers to the 30-50 year old audience. To some degree this could be the same audience that grew up with the band, but the change in style of their music has no doubt made an impact.

Take a look at the differences in these two videos:

APPLICATION OF THE AUDIENCE CYCLE TO MY PRODUCT:
Our chosen song's artist is Tove Lo, a 27 year old Swedish singer and songwriter. She is currently within the pop/indie pop bracket of genres. 10 years from now I imagine her music to shift from a young, party like theme to an older and more matured theme. Other artists I imagine her to be like in 10 years include Florence Welch and Adele. Her target audience would change from a 18-25 age range to a 25-40 age range.
