We needed to give our artist a stage name and a name we could print onto our digipak. As something we could start with, we asked Jakarta (who plays the main female character in our production) what her full name was- Jakarta Mayla Kippax. Due to her Spanish heritage she has quite a unique name.
She liked the idea of just using her middle name, "Mayla" as it is unique but also short and memorable. Lots of solo female artists have one word stage names- Rihanna, Britney, Beyonce, Shakira, Pink etc.
We then put forth this name to a group of target audience members. Many of these agreed that a one word stage name is conventional but that doesn't mean we have to abide by that. After many suggestions and about 10 minutes later, we had chosen the name "Mayla Lee". We liked the name as it features alliteration and also rolls off the tongue very smoothly as opposed to an overly concise "Mayla".
